Opus Chief Medical Officer Dr. Melissa D. Tonn research featured in The Journal of Hand Surgery
At Opus Medical, we’re committed to advancing evidence-based approaches in occupational health. Proud to announce the publication of new research co-authored by our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Melissa D. Tonn, in The Journal of Hand Surgery. The study, “Do Patients Older Than 40 Years with Work Claims for Unilateral Wrist Symptoms Have Symmetric, Bilateral MRI Signal Changes That Do Not Correspond with Symptoms?”, demonstrates that symmetric MRI findings in unilateral wrist claims often point to age-related or idiopathic issues rather than trauma. This reinforces our focus on accurate diagnosis to improve outcomes and efficiency in work injury management.

Rethinking Wrist Injuries in the Workplace: Insights from New Research on Bilateral MRI Findings
As a physician specializing in occupational medicine, I’ve seen firsthand how work-related injuries can impact lives and livelihoods. But what if many “injuries” aren’t from trauma at all, but rather age-related changes misinterpreted as damage? Our latest study, published in The Journal of Hand Surgery, dives into this question for unilateral wrist symptoms in workers over 40. Co-authored with Emily H. Jaarsma MD, David Ring MD, PhD, and Niels Brinkman BS, it challenges common assumptions in work injury claims and highlights the power of bilateral imaging.

When a Hospital Closes, the Workers’ Comp Claim Does Not Stop Moving
Hospital closures are often discussed as a health care access issue, because they are.
For the workers’ compensation system, however, they create another challenge entirely: injured workers still need care, employers still need answers, claims still need direction, and recovery still depends on timely, appropriate decisions from experts in the field.
